Days after his son Bronny James was drafted No. 55 overall by the LA Lakers, star LeBron James agreed to a new two-year, $104 million contract. The deal includes a player option for the 2025-26 season. James also became just the second player in the NBA alongside Phoenix Suns guard Bradley Beal who has a no-trade clause.
LeBron's maximum deal of $104 million will create a dilemma for the Lakers since it puts the franchise $1 million over the NBA's second apron cap ($188.9 million), which creates difficulty in roster maneuverability.
According to ESPN, James' agent and friend, Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul, is set to negotiate with Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka on a lower-salary deal to keep the franchise out of trouble.
Basketball fans have been making fun of LeBron James being granted the maximum deal despite turning 40 years old in December and the difficulty he has had in convincing good players to join him in Los Angeles.
Outspoken Colorado Buffaloes coach Deion Sanders showed his displeasure at the social media memes on X:
"This AIN’T right!" Sanders wrote.
Deion Sanders and LeBron James have a prior relationship, and the Colorado coach praised the Lakers star during the All-Star break for 21 years in the NBA and for wearing Nike LeBron 21s.
"Congratulations to my brother @kingjames for his Class, Grace, Passion, Commitment to Excellence & Consistency for 21 Years!!! Thank u as well for Rocking them "PRIMES" on your stage. Love ya man from Day 1. #CoachPrime I need that Basketball Version. @welloffforever @nike," Sanders wrote on X.
LeBron James speaks about retirement
LeBron James will enter year No. 22 in the NBA when the next season starts. During the All-Star weekend, James spoke about how he would conduct his retirement years.
"I was asked this question a couple days ago," James said. "'Will you kind of take the farewell tour, or will you kind of just Tim Duncan it?'
"I'm 50-50, I'm going to be honest, because there's times when I feel like I guess I owe it to my fans that have been along this journey with me for two decades plus, to be able to give them that moment where it's every city and whatever the case may be and they give you your flowers or whatever the case may be. That seems cool."
LeBron James will finally get to fulfill his wish of taking to the floor with his son, Bronny James, for at least two years before he bids farewell to the league.
