Colorado's two-way star Travis Hunter was named one of the four finalists for the prestigious Heisman Trophy on Monday. He led the Buffs to the verge of the Big 12 Championship Game. According to FanDuel, Hunter is the favorite for the Heisman (-10,000) ahead of Boise State Broncos running back Ashton Jeanty (+1,500).
During Tuesday's episode of "The Pivot" podcast, Hunter spoke about his relationship with Deion Sanders, whose net worth is $45 million per Celebrity Net Worth.
"When I first talked to him, I was like, 'I don't care who he is I don't want to go there,'" Hunter said. "But as I talked to him more it was like, 'Oh, this might be the place I want to go. He's more than just a coach, he's a father.
I don't know where I would be ... I try not to think too much on it because it's our last ... we have one more game and it's going to be our last together. It gets you kind of emotional because it changed my life forever. I texted him after one game a couple games ago and said, 'Coach, you changed my life forever.'"
Travis Hunter and Deion Sanders are close
The charismatic coach convinced Travis Hunter to flip his commitment from the Florida State Seminoles in 2021 to join him in the FCS with the Jackson State Tigers, astounding the college football world. The pair have shared a special relationship since then.
During a news conference before the season began, Coach Prime revealed that the pair often hang out away from the gridiron and praised the Heisman-contending star.
“We talk about everything,” Sanders said. "He’s (Hunter) a good human being, he’s not smoking, not drinking, not outside whoring, not doing crazy things. He’s got one of the highest GPAs on the team, he’s a great human being, and he can play, his character is second to none."
Earlier in the season during Colorado's open week, Travis Hunter and Coach Prime spent the weekend together fishing, and the Buffs coach spoke about their relationship.
"That’s why I don’t mind fishing with him (Hunter)," Sanders said. "And he coming to Texas. And we’re not talking about fishing on the boat, although we talk junk to each other all the time, but we’re talking about life. We’re talking about the next move. We talk about land acquisition. We’re talking about so many different things of life, fathering, you know, loving, how the family plays a role in all of this."
Instead of opting out like most NFL-bound stars, Hunter promised Sanders he would play in the Buffaloes' Alamo Bowl game against the BYU Cougars on Dec. 28 because of their unique relationship.
