When Deion Sanders initially arrived in Boulder, the Colorado Buffaloes had just come out of a disappointing 1-11 campaign. Last season during his debut, they managed to put up a 4-8 season despite Sanders' roster overhaul.
Coach Prime again decided to overhaul his roster and coaching staff this offseason. He brought in more coaches with NFL experience to guide the players and help them develop their talents. And it looks like the work has finally paid off for Deion Sanders and the Buffs.
After their Week 9 34-23 victory against the Cincinnati Bearcats, the Buffs secured a spot in the bowl games this season with a 6-2 campaign so far. This will be their first bowl appearance since the COVID-19-shortened 2020 season where they lost to Texas in the Alamo Bowl.
College football insider Joel Klatt celebrated Colorado's achievement on social media, praising Sanders.
"Colorado was the worst team in the P5 two years ago. ...Deion Sanders came to Boulder as their Head Coach and now they're 6-2 headed to a Bowl... 4-1 in the Big 12 with an outside shot at the Big 12 Title Game. Where you at haters???" Klatt wrote.
Colorado's offense was on the front foot right from the start of the first quarter. Shedeur Sanders found Travis Hunter with a 3-yard TD pass to open the scoring for the Buffs. By the end of the first half, Shedeur had helped the Buffs put up a 10-point lead while recording two TD passes and one rushing TD of his own.
In the second half of the game, Cincinnati did try to make a comeback when QB Brendan Sorsby found Joe Royer with a 6-yard TD pass. Unfortunately, it was not enough to sway the game in their favor. Alejandro Mata's 47-yard field goal was the final nail in the coffin in this Week 9 Big 12 showdown.
Deion Sanders praises two-way star Travis Hunter as the best player in the nation
In the post-game press conference, Coach Prime talked about Travis Hunter's performance and his potential to win the Heisman award.
"Travis is the best college football player in the country. We all know that. Why are we even deliberating over that? What are we doing? Like when does that change?" Coach Prime questioned.
"So what's the criteria?" he said. "Somebody need to say what's the criteria of that prestigious award [Heisman Trophy]. Because we're looking at the best high school football player. There hadn't been a Travis Hunter ever, ever. And I'm sitting up here saying that."
Against the Bearcats, Hunter put up 153 receiving yards and two touchdowns for nine catches. If Colorado's offense continues its impressive form in the last four regular season games, Sanders and his team could potentially become an underdog Big 12 champ and playoff contender.
