In an unexpected series of events, weather may play a part in tonight's matchup between the Texas Longhorns and Ohio State Buckeyes. The game will be held in Arlington, Texas, at 7:30 pm ET.
Although the game will be held indoors, flurries fell during the day, which could impact traveling fans. It should not amount to much snow on the ground and be gone by the time the game starts.
“The fans are here. We’ve got flurries that are falling. It’s very picturesque right now. We know these flurries are not gonna last for too much longer. So we’ve seen a bunch of people come here, take pictures with the snow still on the ground, with the snow actively falling”, The Weather Channel meteorologist Molly McCollum said.
The National Weather Service issued an advisory until noon local time (1 p.m. ET) warning about a drizzle or snow and some ice accumulation.
One major issue fans are facing is flight delays and cancellations due to the icy conditions. As McCollum mentioned, 70% of flights were canceled yesterday and around 20% today, making it hard for last-minute travelers to get to Arlington.
Although there were concerns earlier in the week that the game may have to be delayed or rescheduled, kickoff is expected to take place at 7:30 p.m. ET, as originally planned.
Cotton Bowl weather: Could bad weather be an advantage for Texas?
The CFP semifinal will be played at AT&T Stadium, which means Texas and Ohio State players need not worry about the weather. However, with cold and snowy conditions outside, travel complications could be an unexpected advantage for the Longhorns.
While Texas was already expected to have home-field advantage with the game being played in the state and about a three-hour drive from campus, the difference in the stands might be even bigger now.
It's important to consider that the game is played on Friday, not during the weekend. If Buckeyes fans couldn't make travel arrangements early in the week, they may get stuck trying to make it to Texas.
The weather may play a part in ticket sales, too. According to a Front Office Sports report, tickets in the standing-only room were $100 on Wednesday afternoon. A ticket for Notre Dame's win over Penn State at the Orange Bowl could be bought for no less than $200.
While AT&T Stadium (100,000 capacity) is considerably larger than Hard Rock Stadium (65,000 capacity) because of the large fan base for both schools, tickets were expected to sell at a higher price.
