Indiana football has agreed to give coach Curt Cignetti a contract extension. Cignetti has helped the No. 5-ranked Hoosiers (10-0) stay undefeated with only two games left in the regular season. They are one of the biggest surprises in college football this season, as only a few pundits had much faith in the Hoosiers as a top contender heading into the year.
However, Cignetti has done an excellent job of coaching the team, and they have had a tremendous season together. As a result, Indiana has agreed to give him a contract extension.
On Saturday, it was announced that Cignetti had signed an eight-year contract that runs from 2025 to 2032. It will pay him an average of $8 million annually with an annual $1 million retention bonus. As a result, he will make a total of $9 million per year and $72 million over the course of the deal.
Cignetti made a statement following the announcement of his contract extension.
"I am beyond appreciative for the tremendous commitment, confidence, and support from President Pam Whitten and Athletic Director Scott Dolson," he said. "Manette [his wife] and I love Bloomington and are grateful for how the IU community has embraced us.
"I look forward to leading this outstanding program and doing my part to continue the momentum for Hoosier football."
Athletic director Scott Dolson also issued a statement following the announcement of Curt Cignetti's extension.
"We were confident IU could become a winning program and we love what he's building here," Dolson said. "We love the student-athletes that he's bringing here. We love how our fanbase has rallied around this team and made Memorial Stadium the place to be on Saturday afternoons.
"And now, we love the fact that he's going to be doing all those things right here in Bloomington for a long, long time."
Will Curt Cignetti make any changes to his coaching staff?
With Curt Cignetti signing his big eight-year contract extension, a source also told ESPN's Adam Rittenberg that Indiana plans to increase the pool for Cignetti's assistants and staff significantly. Although there are unlikely to be changes until the offseason, Cignetti could use this extra money to bring in more assistant coaches.
Cignetti was named the Indiana Hoosiers coach on Nov. 30, 2023. Previously, he was the coach of the James Madison Dukes from 2019 to 2023. Before that, he had head coaching experience at Elon and IUP.
