Keanu Koht officially announced his decision to leave the Alabama football program on Tuesday. The linebacker shared the news through a statement crafted alongside his representation, A&P Sports, and posted on social media platforms.
"After careful reflection and consideration, I’ve come to realize that I’ve outgrown the shoes I once wore here,” Koht said in the statement released on Tuesday.
"With that in mind, I have made the decision to enter my name into the transfer portal, with two years of eligibility remaining. This was not an easy choice, but it’s one I believe is best for my future and personal growth.”
Keanu Koht was absent from Alabama’s last two games due to a suspension, though head coach Kalen DeBoer declined to provide specific details regarding the matter. He wrapped up the 2024 season with five tackles, a fumble recovery and half a sack to his name.
The decision to enter the transfer portal has generated a mixed reaction among Alabama fans. Here's a look at some of the reactions online:
A host of fans are positive about Keanu Koht's exit:
"Let him go guys. He stuck with the team for the better part of 3 years. Good luck Keanu," a fan wrote.
"Best of luck. Buddy has great speed either rushing the passer or side line to side line speed," another fan wrote.
Some are critical of his departure:
"This is what’s wrong with college football. He got in trouble and was suspended so instead of grinding it out he’s transferring," a fan wrote.
"The transfer portal makes cowards out of a lot young men," another fan wrote.
"Lol nah Bama outgrew him," one fan wrote.
Keanu Koht sends his appreciation to Alabama
In opening his statement on Tuesday, Keanu Koht was thankful to everyone who played a pivotal role during his tenure at the University of Alabama. The linebacker arrived in Tuscaloosa as a top prospect in the class of 2021 and has seen his career hampered by injuries.
“I want to take a minute to express my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has been a part of my journey here at the University of Alabama,” Koht wrote to open his exit message.
“My coaches, staff, teammates and supporters. The lessons I’ve learned, the relationships I’ve built, and the experiences I’ve gained during my time here are truly priceless, and I will carry them with me throughout my life."
Keanu Koht's departure further depletes Alabama's depth at the edge position. Starter Que Robinson is already sidelined for the season due to an injury sustained during the LSU game, leaving Qua Russaw and Yhonzae Pierre to handle the majority of the snaps moving forward.
Furthermore, his decision to transfer paves the way for two freshmen to step into significant roles this season. Noah Carter and Jayshawn Ross have seen their redshirts removed, providing them an opportunity to earn valuable reps in the remainder of the 2024 season.
