Dan Lanning's Oregon lands commitment of former Alabama WR Malik Benson for 2025 season: Report

Dan Lanning's Oregon Ducks reportedly landed a receiver to help bolster their offense. The Ducks were eliminated by the Ohio State Buckeyes in the College Football Playoff quarterfinals.

After Oregon was eliminated from the playoff, which ended their perfect season, Lanning got to work in the transfer portal. According to college football insider Pete Thamel, the Ducks have landed receiver Malik Benson from the portal. He previously was part of Florida State and Alabama.

"Former FSU/Alabama wide receiver Malik Benson has committed to Oregon, he tells ESPN. Benson has an extra year thanks to the recent JUCO ruling in the wake of the Diego Pavia eligibility decision. He had 473 receiving yards and 2 TDs the past two years," Thamel reported.

Benson played at Alabama in 2023, registering 13 receptions for 162 yards and a touchdown. After one season with Alabama, he transferred to Florida State for this past season and had 25 receptions for 311 yards and one touchdown.

Benson was a four-star prospect out of JUCO and will help boost the Ducks offense. Oregon is set to lose star receiver Tez Johnson who has declared for the 2025 NFL Draft.

Dan Lanning takes responsibility for Oregon's loss

The Oregon Ducks looked like the team to beat all college football season but were one-and-done in the playoffs. The Ducks were blown out by Ohio State and Dan Lanning took responsibility for the loss.

"They clicked tonight and we didn’t. I didn’t get our team prepared. And that’s a great team. When you play a great team like Ohio State, you can’t not be clicking on all cylinders. And they were. They were clicking on all cylinders," Lanning said, via SI.

"We really didn’t have the ability to stop them, and we didn’t have the ability to get something going for us on offense. We haven’t faced a lot of moments like this all year. It’s an unbelievable team.

"Coach Day and his staff have done an unbelievable job there. I don’t want to discredit what our players have been able to accomplish this year. We had a great team. We just ran into a great team tonight, and we didn’t play our best. Credit to those guys."

Lanning led the Ducks to a Big Ten Championship in its first season in the conference.
