Shedeur Sanders had a brilliant college football season with Colorado last season. The Jackson State transfer arrived in Boulder with his father, Deion Sanders, ahead of the 2023 season and was fantastic in the Buffaloes’ offense despite the team's struggles.
In an interview with The Athletic’s Bruce Feldman, a former Pac-12 coach who chose to remain anonymous believes that Coach Prime will try to win Shedeur Sanders the Heisman Trophy in the 2024 season. The quarterback was one of the frontrunners for the coveted award in 2023 before Colorado's struggles began.
"He's an NFL guy,” the coach said. “Is he the first pick of the draft? I don't know, but I think he's a real dude. I think he throws it well. He's accurate. I think he's a first-round draft pick. I think Deion's going to try to win Shedeur the Heisman.”
“I think they'll be good. They have good wideouts. Their O-line will be better. I think they'll be way better and they'll have a good year.”
Does Shedeur Sanders have a chance at the Heisman Trophy?
Shedeur Sanders is currently considered among the frontrunners for the Heisman Trophy and he has a good chance of claiming the award in 2024. However, a lot depends on the performance of Colorado, who ended the 2023 season with a 4-8 record, in the upcoming season.
The sportsbook odds, however, do not favor him much at the moment with long odds of +7000. This comes as a result of Colorado’s unimpressive performance last season. He is well behind the likes of Carson Beck, Quinn Ewers, Jalen Milroe, Dillon Gabriel and a host of others.
Despite not being considered by sportsbooks for the Heisman Trophy ahead of the 2023 season, Shedeur Sanders was given +3500 odds following his Week 1 performance against TCU. However, this had plummeted to +35000 in Week 9 before finally disappearing from the odds board.
Will Deion Sanders get it right with Colorado in the Big 12?
Following a disappointing first season at Colorado, Deion Sanders will be looking to get it right in the Big 12 next season. The Buffaloes started the previous season on a brilliant note, winning the first three games. However, they were only able to win one of the last eight.
Having made some significant roster improvements, Colorado is poised to get better in the upcoming season. They will be playing in the Big 12, whose strength has been largely reduced with the exit of Texas and Oklahoma. It is to be seen how they eventually fair in Coach Prime's second season.
