Alabama A&M Bulldogs guard Shelomi Sanders, the daughter of Colorado coach Deion Sanders, is settling into her new program after entering the transfer portal from the Buffaloes in April. The move landed her in her third school in three years after previously playing for Jackson State.
Off the court, Shelomi has been outspoken about her type 1 diabetes condition. During an interview posted on the Dexcom Instagram page on Friday, she talked about the struggles of suffering from her disease.
"When I'm low, you can kind of tell. Like my whole energy or whatever just drops," Shelomi Sanders said. "That's a big part of my success, I think. Just having teammates and stuff that really support me, that support system means a lot."
In an Instagram live session, Shelomi's mother, the ever-supportive Pilar Sanders, revealed how the Alabama A&M starlet used to hide her glucometer when she was a child, leading to the whole household engaging in a "scavenger hunt" to find it when it started beeping.
Shelomi Sanders defies Coach Prime with huge decision
The Sanders clan moves as one. When charismatic coach Deion Sanders took the Colorado Buffaloes job in 2022, all three of his children still in school left Jackson State via the transfer portal to join him in Boulder.
While the brothers Shilo and Shedeur Sanders thrived in the FBS, Shelomi Sanders only appeared as a substitute for the Lady Buffs basketball team, totaling eleven minutes. In April, she made headlines when she decided to enter the transfer portal.
After the decision by his daughter to enter the transfer portal, her father voiced his displeasure at the move during an appearance on the "DVNR" podcast.
"(It) was stupid," Deion said. "You don't enter the portal. You get a team before you enter the portal. You kinda get a team before you enter the portal. You know, that's what I would advise a child. And I know, 'Well, it's illegal...' C'mon, man."
During an Instagram live, the outspoken Shelomi revealed why she left Boulder and her family via the transfer portal.
“I don’t want to say anything too bad,” Sanders said. “It just wasn’t good energy. It wasn’t good vibes. There wasn’t enough being poured into me as a player and young lady. If I didn’t leave when I did, I promise you I would’ve quit.”
Despite Coach Prime's protests, Shelomi Sanders has made the move to Alabama A&M stick, and she is receiving overt support from her mother, Pilar Sanders.
