Even at 39 years old, LeBron James continues to distinguish himself as a difference-maker. A week ago, in an epic come-from-behind game, Team USA, full of NBA stars, won 101-100 against South Sudan. The Lakers star was also chosen as Team USA's flagbearer alongside tennis star Coco Gauff during the 2024 Paris Olympics opening ceremony, underlining his superstar status.
On July 26, while Team USA was en route to the ceremony via boats floating down the Seine River, Minnesota Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards and Las Vegas Aces star Kelsey Plum took a picture together that went viral and turned into a meme. In the capture, the duo seems to share an inside joke, with a serious-looking LeBron James appearing in the background.
Colorado coach Deion Sanders' eldest son, Deion Sanders Jr. aka Bucky, liked the picture in a post made by Bleacher Report:
LeBron James shows work ethic amid Olympic gold chase
James returned to Team USA after a 12-year hiatus since his last appearance in the 2012 London Olympics, seeking his third gold medal.
The Lakers star continued his rich vein of form in the USA's opening game, a 110-84 win over Serbia. He registered 23 points, nine rebounds and seven assists, helping the Olympics get off to a positive start. He opened the scoring for his team in its game against Serbia, led by Denver Nuggets star Nikola Jokić, who opened a 10-2 lead in the first quarter.
After Friday's team practice, Team USA coach Steve Kerr, whose Golden State Warriors have clashed repeatedly with James over the years, praised the NBA superstar's work ethic.
“Pretty amazing,” Kerr said. “I’m just blown away by his effort, concentration and focus in every single drill. He talks. Even in a shoot-around [or] walk-through, his voice [is] behind the play, yelling out what’s happening, yelling out the scheme. His leadership by example, the guy is incredible. I’ve known that forever, but to see it up close is pretty special.” [H/T Sports Illustrated]
James will turn 40 years old in December but has shown no signs of slowing down anytime soon, even as he leads a team full of NBA stars. LeBron James will get a chance to put on a show once again when Team USA plays against South Sudan on Tuesday. This will be a rematch of their exhibition game played in London a few days ago.
