The Colorado Buffaloes under coach Deion Sanders eclipsed their 2023 win total with a comprehensive 34-7 Week 8 win over the Arizona Wildcats in Tuscon.
The Buffs improved to 5-2 overall and 3-1 in Big 12 play with the victory. This came on the back of a stellar performance by quarterback Shedeur Sanders, even in the absence of injured star Travis Hunter, who was withdrawn from the game as a precaution.
While he has been getting praise from all corners, not everyone is enamored by Coach Prime. Media personality Jason Whitlock, who has never hidden his derision for Sanders, once again criticized the Buffs coach during Monday's episode of his 'Fearless' show (0:37).
"Deion Sanders," Whitlock said. "Everybody's celebrating, man they're 5-2. Look at this turnaround, Deion Sanders is back, he's done it, this is incredible. I'm not buying it. Deion Sanders is fool's gold. And what Colorado is doing is fool's gold and yes, they may win six or seven or eight games this year. They may win nine, I don't know.
"But it's not one of the most impressive things I've ever seen given the way college football has changed. This is a reflection of the transfer portal and being able to just buy up talent. You don't have to recruit talent, you don't have to develop talent, you have to buy talent."
Deion Sanders gets props from controversial analyst
During Sunday's episode of the 'Matt Barrie Show', analyst Paul Finebaum, who has been engaged in a war of words with Deion Sanders, gave the Buffs coach props for his team's form.
"I was all over him (Sanders)," Finebaum said. “But this is what should be going on. We should be appreciating and complimenting Deion Sanders for what he does on the field, not for the show. And that’s what irritated a lot of people. He was getting credited, and we were being asked ridiculous questions. I give him major credit for dealing with injuries — the Travis Hunter situation.
"His two sons both have been banged up — and really go out and convincingly win games. That’s hard to do. This is a bowl team now. I’m sure some of our friends up and down the hall where you live and work will have them in the playoffs tomorrow morning. They’re probably not going to be in the playoffs, but they have a very narrow path to at least take a swing.”
At the beginning of the season, Deion Sanders promised Colorado superfan Miss Peggy that he would lead the Buffaloes to bowl eligibility for the first time since 2016. Now, the Buffs are one win away from fulfilling their coach's promise.
