Colorado's two-way star Travis Hunter had to watch his main rival for the Heisman Trophy, Boise State Broncos running back Ashton Jeanty, lead his team to a 21-7 win over the UNLV Rebels. This victory came in the Mountain West Conference championship game on Saturday and clinched a berth for the team in the College Football Playoff.
Hunter's season came to an end when the Buffaloes beat the Oklahoma State Cowboys 52-0 in Week 14 action.
According to BetMGM, Hunter is priced at -10,000 to win the prestigious trophy while Jeanty is priced at +3,000. But the debate around the status of the winner has continued to rage on, less than a week until it is announced in New York.
On Thursday, the Oregon Duck mascot made an appearance on the "Pat McAfee Show," where he endorsed Jeanty to win the Heisman over Hunter. Deion Sanders Jr., Coach Prime's eldest son, hit back at Oregon Duck on X for taunting Hunter.
"Y'all are the #1 in the nation & y'all whooped our a*s last year… why tf is bro on there worried about us? Sh*t weird as hell," Deion Sanders Jr. posted on X.
College football fans on X had mixed reactions to Sanders Jr.'s reaction to the Oregon Duck's antics.
The fans drilled down on Sanders Jr. arguing with a mascot.
"Arguing with a mascot is a new one," one fan tweeted.
"It’s just a mascot sir…," another fan tweeted.
"Sub-Prime arguing with a mascot wasn't something I thought I'd read about today," one fan tweeted.
The Travis Hunter vs. Ashton Jeanty Heisman debate rolls on
In the past few weeks, Boise State Broncos running back Ashton Jeanty has emerged as Travis Hunter's closest challenger for the Heisman Trophy. During the Mountain West Conference game against the UNLV Rebels, Fox analyst Brock Huard took Jeanty's side.
“To me … if only coaches voted, Ashton Jeanty would win the Heisman,” Huard said. “I really fully believe that. They know. Travis Hunter’s the most spectacular, most dynamic player. But the best player, who’s elevated his team to a championship and a playoff and a bye is that guy. And I love Travis Hunter.
“I said it earlier, if you already voted and you’re a Heisman voter … just don’t vote ever again. It just makes no sense to me,” Huard said. “Get every data point for all of these guys – for Dillon tomorrow. Get every data point you can.”
The 2024 Heisman Trophy debate will go down to the wire as Ashton Jeanty attempts to wrest control of the race away from Travis Hunter with a week to the ceremony left.
