Colorado Buffaloes star Travis Hunter won the Heisman Trophy on Saturday. He was awarded the trophy over other finalists, Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty, Miami QB Cam Ward, and Oregon QB Dillon Gabriel. However, many people in the college football world believe that Jeanty should have won the award over Colorado's two-way star.
In response to Travis Hunter's Heisman haters, Deion Sanders Jr. (who is a videographer for the Colorado Buffaloes) posted a video on Twitter with the caption:
"It’s damn near a week later & boys still hating on the Heisman… like that’s gone change something."
In the video, it alludes to Travis Hunter being the G.O.A.T. (Greatest of All Time).
Why has Travis Hunter received criticism for his Heisman win?
There are a few different reasons fans have started to criticize Travis Hunter for his Heisman win. The most obvious reason is many people believe Ashton Jeanty should have won the award.
Jeanty had the fourth-best rushing season for a running back ever, finishing the season with 2497 yards and 29 TDs on 344 carries. This placed him less than 200 yards behind Barry Sanders for the all-time record he set back in the 80s.
People who believe Jeanty should have won argue that Travis Hunter was not the best player at either of his positions. They argue that Hunter was an excellent wide receiver and cornerback, there were better players at both positions this season. However, most voters agreed that excellence at two positions was more valuable than being the best at one.
There are also several fans who criticize Hunter for winning the award because they think he got favorable media attention this season because he plays for Coach Prime. This is relevant because the Heisman is often awarded based on narrative. Voters can be swayed by narratives, and Hunter got a lot of media attention this season.
Furthermore, Deion Sanders is a polarizing figure in the college football community. Some people hate him, and as a result, they will never believe that Hunter could be deserving of the Heisman.
Despite the criticism of fans, most voters agreed that Hunter was the most deserving Heisman candidate this season. However, it ended up being a closer vote than many people expected. Hunter won with 2,231 points and 552 first-place votes. However, Jeanty was not far behind with 2,017 points and 309 first-place votes.
