Colorado two-way star Travis Hunter missed the chance to further enhance his eye-popping numbers during his team's narrow 31-28 Week 7 loss to the No. 18 Kansas State Wildcats.
Hunter left the game in the second quarter with an apparent shoulder injury and did not come out for the second half. Despite his absence, the Buffs almost pulled off an incredible comeback to win the game.
Before Week 7, Hunter was second favorite for the coveted Heisman Trophy just behind Boise State Broncos running back Ashton Jeanty. However, his odds tumbled after leaving the Kansas State game. He is now third with +1100 odds to win the Heisman behind Oregon Ducks' Dillon Gabriel and Jeanty.
On Wednesday, during an appearance on the "Outta Pocket" podcast, Travis Hunter had his say on who deserved the Heisman more between himself and the Boise State running back and he made his case as a two-way player while downplaying the case for a running back being the favorite for the trophy.
His comments caused discourse on the matter among fans and analysts with some fans on X claiming that the Buffs star was not humble which led to Deion Sanders Jr., Coach Prime's eldest son retweeting a post rubbishing the claims.
The post was captioned:
"Quit with the fake narratives that Travis Hunter is not humble or he demeaned Ashton Jeanty he gives credit where credit is due the problem is that you all “Media Heads” let his confidence offend your insecurities."
The Deion Sanders factor in the Travis Hunter Heisman race
Travis Hunter plays under Deion Sanders, one of the sport's premier two-way players who has encouraged Hunter to play on both sides of the ball. Before the game against the Kansas State Wildcats, Hunter had played in 92% of the Buffs' snaps this season.
Before the Wildcats game, the charismatic Colorado coach was in campaign mode for Hunter to win the Heisman. During an appearance on ESPN's "College GameDay," he took light-hearted offense to analyst Pat McAfee favoring Ashton Jeanty over Hunter for the award.
"How do you even fix your mouth to say that?" Sanders said.
This season, Jeanty has registered 1,248 yards on 126 carries resulting in 17 touchdowns through six games. Travis Hunter has tallied 587 yards on 49 receptions resulting in six touchdowns on offense while adding two interceptions, one forced fumble, and 18 total tackles in defense and it seems as if the race for the Heisman will go down to the wire between the two candidates.
