Deion Sanders and the No. 21 Colorado Buffaloes are set to play the Texas Tech Red Raiders Saturday at 4 p.m. ET. Sanders did an interview on Big Noon Kickoff and was asked who he thinks should win the Heisman Trophy between his son Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter.
Sanders coaches both players and as a result, fans would expect him to have a good perspective on both of them. However, he is also the father of Shedeur Sanders, so he is not an unbiased person. Here's how Coach Prime responded.
"Travis gets my vote. Travis is the best player in college football. Truly Shedeur is that guy, he's the catalyst, he makes everything go, and he enables Travis to be Travis. But Travis Hunter is doing something we've never seen before."
Both players have a chance to win the award as they rank in the top 10 in Heisman Trophy winner odds. However, Hunter is part of the top four that have separated themselves from the competition.
Despite missing parts of two games because of a shoulder injury, Hunter still ranks second in Heisman odds and has the stats to back it up. He has 60 receptions for 757 yards and eight touchdowns. Additionally, he has 21 tackles, including 14 solo efforts, and two interceptions.
Sanders is seventh in Heisman odds, but there is a big gap from fourth to fifth. It is not impossible for him to win, but he would need some massive performances in the final games of the season. Through eight games, he has 2,591 yards and 21 touchdowns.
Is Coach Prime right that Hunter should win the Heisman?
Hunter has the second-best odds to win the Heisman according to FanDuel. He is part of a group of four at the top of the odds list that has separated itself. The top five contenders are as follows.
- Miami QB Cameron Ward (+130)
- Colorado two-way player Travis Hunter (+230)
- Oregon QB Dillon Gabriel (+380)
- Boise State RB Ashton Jeanty (+550)
- Indiana QB Kurtis Rourke (+2000)
It seems clear that the Heisman winner will come from that group of four players.
