Colorado Buffaloes two-way star Travis Hunter was named the 2024 Heisman winner during the award ceremony in New York on Saturday. He beat Boise State's Ashton Jeanty, Oregon's Dillon Gabriel and Miami's Cam Ward to become the 90th winner of the prestigious award.
Attending the ceremony in New York were his Colorado teammate, Shedeur Sanders, coach Deion Sanders, his fiancee Leanna Lenee, rapper Lil Wayne and his mother, Ferrante Edmonds.
On Sunday, Shedeur posted a heartwarming picture on Instagram of himself and Hunter holding the Heisman Trophy with the caption:
"Legendary," Shedeur wrote.
Shedeur's soon-to-be brother-in-law and his sister Deiondra Sander's fiance, Jacquees congratulated Travis Hunter on his Heisman win.
"This that real s**t lil bru," Jacquees wrote.
Sanders family rallies around Travis Hunter
Travis Hunter has been close to Colorado Buffaloes coach Deion Sander's family ever since he flipped his recruitment from the Florida State Seminoles to join the Jackson State Tigers in 2021.
It was one of the most interesting flips in college football history. Hunter was the highest-rated prospect to play for an HBCU (historically black & colored university) at the time.
During an October 8 interview on the "Richard Sherman" podcast, Hunter revealed how the Sanders family was key to him flipping his recruitment to Jackson State from Florida State.
“My family felt comfortable first before he (Sanders) even made me feel comfortable," Hunter said. "So my mom was just like, yeah, I think this is the best deal for us to go learn for somebody that actually did it, even though my mom don't watch football, she know who Coach Prime is.
"So it was kind of crazy just how he kept his family around, like having Shedeur as his quarterback Shiloh standing around, his oldest son Bucky standing around, his daughters are standing around. It's just like, it's family oriented and that's exactly what I wanted to be and I wanted to learn from somebody like that.”
On Wednesday, during an episode of the "Pivot" podcast, Travis Hunter spoke about his bond with the Sanders brothers.
"It's definitely all four of us you know Bucky (Deion Sanders Jr.), Bucky is just like a big brother, he helps me out and I help him out," Hunter said.
"I mean, we have that bond, nobody can break us apart. When we around each other, nothing but goofballs. We always laugh, we always talking smack but they definitely took me in, inside their bond and brought me in as a brother."
During the season, Coach Prime even championed Travis Hunter to win the Heisman Trophy over his quarterback son, Shedeur Sanders perhaps indicating just how well-regarded the two-way star is within the Sanders household.
