Head coach Deion Sanders will earn $5.9 million in the 2024-25 season to coach the No. 18 Colorado Buffaloes. However, despite that, the college football coach isn't among the top 10 highest-paid college football coaches.
On the one hand, this is not surprising as Colorado isn't a prestigious college football program. However, Sanders is a famous name in college football, so many fans would expect him to be one of the highest-paid coaches.
Joe Pompliano, the host of "The Joe Pomp Show," said this about Sanders via a tweet on Thursday:
"Deion Sanders is the most underpaid coach in college football — but it's not for the reason you might think. Colorado's football success has already led to a 20% jump in applications at the school, and they will now focus on admitting more out-of-state students than in-state students (because these students pay $40,000 in annual tuition compared to $13,000)."
He added a video to the tweet in which he spoke in detail about everything Sanders has brought to the University of Colorado Boulder. Pompliano spoke about the positive impact Sanders has had on the business side of Colorado's athletic department and the downstream impact of his hiring on Colorado's broader economics as a university.
Deion Sanders' influence has allowed the Colorado Buffaloes to recruit star players
Pompliano believes Sanders is underpaid because of what he did to increase university applications. While that is the case, Sanders' presence has also led directly to the football team's success and not just because of his coaching.
Sanders is a great coach, but his name has allowed the school to recruit star players to its football team. The two most obvious players that came to Colorado because of Deion Sanders are his sons quarterback Shedeur Sanders and safety Shilo Sanders.
Adding those players made it more enticing for superstar two-way player Travis Hunter to join Colorado in 2023. All three players came to Colorado in 2023, the same year Deion arrived. All three players played for Jackson State before 2023, the school Coach Prime previously coached for. So, if Sanders did not come to Colorado, it would not have the stars it has today.
