Ryan Day and the Ohio State Buckeyes defeated the Tennessee Volunteers in the first round of the 12-team college football playoffs today. Right from the start of the game, the Buckeyes took a strong lead with an effective offensive performance that helped them clinch a 42-17 victory.
Diehard Ohio State fan LeBron James has also been closely following the Buckeyes vs. Tennessee playoff face-off despite having his own NBA game to worry about. A video of LeBron James' loyalty to Ohio State is going viral on social media.
James helped the Lakers secure a 103-99 victory over the Sacramento Kings. After the game, he was watching the college football playoff showdown between Ohio State and Tennessee in the locker room while answering questions from the media.
At that time, the Buckeyes were up 21-0 and LeBron James took this opportunity to troll his teammate, Dalton Knetch, who is from Tennessee.
"Hey DK! 21-nothing. Don't worry about it," LeBron James said.
Ryan Day helped the Buckeyes to a 10-2 campaign this season. While they failed to compete in the Big Ten conference title, the Buckeyes are considered a strong contender for the natty in this year's 12-team playoffs. The Buckeyes took a 21-0 lead against Tennessee in the first quarter.
In the second quarter, the Vols put themselves on the scoreboard thanks to a 36-yard FG by Max Gilbert and a rushing touchdown by Nico Iamaleava. Ryan Day's team kept the pressure on offense and scored three more touchdowns in the second half, making it difficult for Tennessee to make a comeback.
Ryan Day opens up about attitude and passion of Ohio State players ahead of playoff clash against Tennessee
In the regular season, the Buckeyes needed to pull off a win against Michigan in Week 14 to compete for the conference title. Unfortunately, Michigan, despite lacking efficiency this season, secured a 13-10 victory, destroying the program's hopes of winning the Big Ten title.
Before the first-round playoff showdown, Ryan Day made an appearance on the College GameDay show. While speaking with Pat McAfee, he talked about the passion of his players and their hunger for success.
"There's a lot of passion with these guys and you know that passion that fire," Day said. "We have our senior tackle that has been going on for over 100 years. I don't know if you remember senior tackle here at Ohio State. It's an excellent opportunity for our seniors to get up and speak in front of the group and just hear the love they have for Ohio State, their program for their teammates, and the passion and fire."
"That runs deep within the team and so that's what coming off that loss, you have a week to identify what the issues are, come together and two weeks of unbelievable practice. Now they have the opportunity to go into the stadium and finish the right way."
Ohio State has had a dry spell these past few years under Ryan Day. It will be interesting to see if he can help the Buckeyes succeed by winning the natty this season.
