The Florida Gators utilized the services of backup quarterback DJ Lagway after starting quarterback Graham Mertz was lost for the season after he tore his ACL against the Tennessee Volunteers in Week 7 of college football action. Lagway left the Week 10 clash against the Georgia Bulldogs midway through the second quarter with a strained hamstring and did not return to the game.
On Thursday, ESPN insider Pete Thamel gave an update on X, formerly Twitter, about Lagway's progress ahead of the Week 11 clash against the Texas Longhorns.
"Florida lists starting QB DJ Lagway and RB Montrell Johnson Jr. as questionable for the game at Texas. Lagway injured his hamstring against Georgia last week and Billy Napier has said he's not ruled out for Austin," Thamel tweeted.
Embattled Florida coach Billy Napier also gave an update on Lagway during his weekly news conference before the game against the Texas Longhorns in Week 11 of college football action.
“I think he's trying,” Napier said. “You think about him; he's going back to his home state. He wants to try to find a pathway to make this work. It's touch and go. Look, the guy’s giving it his best shot. We'll see where we're at in the league. There's no secret to it anymore. You guys will have a good idea where we’re at when we approach kickoff.”
DJ Lagway has become an important cog for Gators
DJ Lagway made his case to be the Florida Gators' starting quarterback early in the season when QB1 Graham Mertz started the season in mixed fashion and strengthened his case when Mertz was absent with a concussion.
Lagway has registered 1,071 yards resulting in six touchdowns and five interceptions this season in limited game time as he shared minutes with Mertz prior to his injury.
After Lagway's injury against Georgia, Napier turned to walk-on quarterback Aidan Warner to steer the Florida Gators for the rest of the game, and he is due to start against the Texas Longhorns in Week 11 of college football action.
During his weekly news conference, Napier was positive about the possibility of Warner replacing DJ Lagway against Texas.
"I think he's gotten a little better each day," Napier said of Warner. "I thought today was his best day. I think he's gotten a little more comfortable. He's obviously taking a few more reps than he normally does."
Florida has a 4-4 record, and Gators fans will hope that DJ Lagway can recover in time to help steer the team to possible bowl eligibility and avoid another losing season under Napier.
