DJ McKinney transferred to play for the Colorado Buffaloes this offseason. The cornerback began his collegiate career with the Oklahoma State Cowboys last season and was brought in by Coach Prime as a part of a massive roster overhaul for Colorado's 2024 Big 12 reunion campaign.
DJ McKinney played during Colorado's week 2 showdown against the Nebraska Cornhuskers. So what did the CB do during the game?
DJ McKinney targeting penalty
During the game, DJ McKinney was called for targeting and could have been ejected. The incident took place after Colorado had lost LB Trevor Woods to an ejection for targeting in the first half.
However, after a review by the referees, DJ McKinney wasn't ejected, as it was confirmed that there was no targeting involved. It took place after Colorado and Nebraska had one player each ejected from for physical plays.
The showdown between Colorado and Nebraska was one-sided from the start. Matt Rhule's Cornhuskers put up a substantial 28-0 lead by the end of the first half.
Nebraska QB Dylan Raiola put up another impressive performance to help his team outclass the Buffs and exact revenge following last year's loss at Folsom Field.
Shilo Sanders injured during week 2 showdown against Nebraska
Apart from their first loss of the 2024 season, the Colorado Buffaloes also suffered another major blow. Safety Shilo Sanders was injured during the first half of the game after colliding with Nebraska's Dante Dowdell while trying to intercept his run.
The collision left Shilo with a broken forearm, which Coach Prime later confirmed while speaking with NBC on the sidelines. The Colorado safety was sidelined from the rest of the game as fans await updates on his injury.
Shilo Sanders transferred from Jackson State last year along with his father and brother Shedeur Sanders. He was a key player on the Buffs' defense last season and is playing his final collegiate campaign before declaring for the 2025 NFL Draft.
However, his injury could make Shilo reconsider his future plans. A broken forearm usually takes two to six months to heal. So, if his injury is a serious one, the Colorado safety could be out for more than half the season.
It will be interesting to see how Deion Sanders addresses these problems as Colorado continues its Big 12 reunion campaign.
