Week 6 of the college football season is upon us but one of the top-ranked teams in the nation will not be participating, that is, the Oklahoma Sooners (4-1).
The number 19 ranked Sooners are coming off a 27-21 bounce-back win last week after losing in the previous week 25-15 to the number 4 ranked Tennessee Volunteers. They have an open week before playing number 2 ranked Texas (5-0) next week.
Does Oklahoma play today?
No, Oklahoma will not be playing today or at all this week. The Sooners have an open week, meaning they do not have any games this week.
Every college football team gets a few open weeks during the season to rest and recover. So, the Sooners will stay at home this week and get ready to host the number 2 ranked Texas Longhorns next week.
Can Oklahoma make it to the college football playoffs this season?
Yes, Oklahoma can make the college football playoffs, but playing in the Southeastern Conference means it will be a tough task. The SEC features some of the best teams in the nation, including Texas, Alabama, Tennessee and Georgia. Making the playoffs while competing against those teams will be difficult.
In the new 12-team college football playoff format, the five highest-ranked conference champions automatically make the playoffs. Then, the next seven highest-ranked teams as determined by the CFP selection committee make the playoffs.
The four highest-ranked champions earn a bye through the first round, and the fifth-ranked champion plays the number 12 seed.
The Sooners are seventh in the SEC with a 1-1 in-conference record and 4-1 overall record. Standings are determined by in-conference record with the overall record used as a tiebreaker.
With so many strong teams in the SEC, it is possible for the Sooners to win the conference, but it is not likely. So, they will likely need to rely on being selected as one of the seven non-champions to make the playoffs.
For that to happen, the Sooners will need to pick up wins over a few highly-ranked opponents. They will have the opportunity to do that with games against ranked opponents like Texas, Ole Miss, Missouri, Alabama and LSU all still on the schedule.
