The future of former New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick has caused a big discussion in college football in the past few days. This happened after it emerged that he had been interviewed for the North Carolina Tar Heels job.

The position is vacant after the Tar Heels fired former coach Mack Brown last week before the regular season came to an end.

During Thursday's segment of ESPN's "First Take," former NFL star Cam Newton spoke about the Belichick to UNC speculation.

"I don't think he'd fit," Newton said. "And in large part because of this era that we're living in with the entitlement kids. Now, the thing that I admired the most about Coach Belichick was that he was an astute student of the game. He was almost like an almanac right, and he would teach the sport of football to everybody. From trainers to kickers to punters.
"Everybody just had to understand the point of emphasis that he was trying to make. I don't know if that works for a 17-year-old, five-star recruit that feels like he's supposed to get even more money from NIL, and this type of attitude when even in the playoffs, you've seen the documentaries, you've seen former players talk about it, he believes in practice and I mean practicing hard."

Bill Belichick tabbed for UNC job despite NIL concerns

During Thursday's segment of the "Thursday Night Football Show," NFL insider Albert Breer spoke about the possible reasons behind Bill Belichick interviewing for the North Carolina job.

This is despite the nascent NIL concerns that have plagued college football and were one of the deciding factors behind former Alabama coach Nick Saban retiring in January.

"I was told by somebody who would know earlier this week that, whether it’s in high school, college, or the pros, Bill Belichick will coach in 2025,” Breer said. “The assumption would be that it’s going to be in the NFL. I still think that’s the most likely scenario. However, he’s not going to take an NFL job to just take an NFL job.
"Things have to be right — the structure, the reporting structure — all of that different stuff has to be in place. That’s why he’s looked at potential alternatives. He and a group of people around him have really studied the college game."

Bill Belichick, who turns 73 years old next year, does not have any college football experience. But he would bring considerable gravitas to Chapel Hill, should he decide to take over from the fired Mack Brown.
