Two-time Super Bowl MVP Eli Manning appeared on CNBC on Tuesday to discuss the changes to the college football landscape, in particular, the NIL and era and increasing use of the transfer portal. Manning said he is happy players are getting paid because they deserve it. However, he also believes players should not transfer every season, as many have in recent years.
After the interview, CNBC reporter Alex Sherman talked about a private conversation he had with Manning about his nephew.
"Yeah, you know, I think Eli Manning spoke from a fan's perspective. Which, I think, is interesting because not only was he once a high profile college football player himself, but his nephew, Arch Manning, is actually currently a college football player, kind of going through the process. (1:20)
"I asked him if he's watching, and he said, 'Of course, I'm watching.' He said, 'I'm passionate about the game. I'm passionate about Texas,' where his nephew is playing. But, I think he speaks from a general sentiment of concern that many long-time fans of college football are now kind of going through mentally.
"Which is, they still love the game, they still love their teams, they're excited for an expanded College Football Playoff. But at the same time, this idea of the constant transferring and payment of athletes kind of rubs people the wrong way, and I think 'concern' is the right word."
Eli Manning will watch his nephew Arch Manning start at Texas next season
Eli Manning spoke passionately like a fan during his interview with CNBC. He will become an even bigger fan next season because his nephew, Arch Manning, is expected to become Texas' starting quarterback.
Although Arch Manning has been at Texas for two seasons, he has been a backup quarterback behind starter Quinn Ewers. While Ewers still has one season of NCAA eligibility, he is expected to enter the 2025 NFL Draft. Even if he opts to stay in college, the Longhorns have said that Manning will be the starter, meaning Ewers would need to transfer.
Arch has gained a lot of hype as the nephew of two former NFL star quarterbacks, Peyton and Eli Manning. He has shown flashes of his talent in limited playing time these past two seasons.
