College football fans are torn after the UNLV Rebels' starting quarterback, Matthew Sluka, announced his decision to redshirt on Tuesday. Sluka made the announcement to redshirt in a post on X after the school apparently failed to deliver on some of his promises.
Sluka is reportedly having an NIL dispute with UNLV, so he won't play anymore this season. The news caught many by surprise, and college football fans were left debating about his decision.
"Embarrassing," a fan wrote.
"If the school broke promises to him then he has every right to leave and hold them accountable," another added.
Sluka has led UNLV to a 3-0 record, and the Rebels have a legit chance of being the Group of Five bid to the College Football Playoff.
"This is business! False promises in business are dangerous! I stand with Matt Sluka!! Good for him! I hope the rest of the student athletes realize their worth! NIL is business, and he is making a true business decision! They are on the map right now because he is ballin! Pay the Man! No different in the NFL," a fan added.
"Good for him," a fan wrote.
It's clear fans are torn on Sluka's decision to leave UNLV due to an NIL dispute.
"Everyone having fun yet? This is what everyone wanted. Right?" a fan wrote.
"Let me just ask, and I'm spitballing here, if your new job offered you a salary double your current position, you signed on, and then the checks didn't come.... would you stay? Put it in real life terms, and it makes a lot more sense, doesn't it!" another wrote.
Matthew Sluka transferred to UNLV this season after four years at Holy Cross. At UNLV, Sluka has gone 21 for 48 for 318 yards, six touchdowns and one interception.
Matthew Sluka explains decision to leave UNLV
Matthew Sluka shockingly announced he would redshirt for the rest of the season.
Sluka has led UNLV to a 3-0 record, but taking to social media on Tuesday, he announced the school didn't fulfill some promises.
"I have decided to utilize my redshirt year and will not be playing in any additional games this season. I committed to UNLV based on certain representations that were made to me, which were not upheld after I enrolled," Sluka wrote on social media.
"Despite discussions, it became clear that these commitments would not be fulfilled in the future. I wish my teammates the best of luck this season and hope for the continued success of the program."
With Matthew Sluka redshirting, Hajj-Malik Williams will likely be the Rebels starting quarterback.
