ESPN's Elle Duncan feels for Kirby Smart on tragic loss following Sugar Bowl

Georgia coach Kirby Smart's father died on Saturday, just two days after the Bulldogs fell to Notre Dame in the Sugar Bowl. Since the news broke, condolences have poured in from across the college football community.

One notable figure to extend sympathies was ESPN analyst Elle Duncan. Upon hearing the news, Duncan shared her heartfelt condolences in a message on X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday.

“Heartfelt condolences to Kirby Smart and his family on the loss of his father, Sonny. A man who shaped champions on and off the field—may his legacy live on. 🕊️,” Duncan wrote.

Kirby Smart’s father's cause of death

Sonny Smart, Kirby Smart’s father, suffered a severe fall on Tuesday that resulted in a fractured hip. He was immediately taken to the hospital for medical care. Despite undergoing surgery, he was unable to recover and passed away early Saturday morning.

The University of Georgia released a statement on Saturday confirming Sonny Smart’s death.

“Sonny Smart passed away on Jan. 4, 2025, at 12:15 a.m. surrounded by his wife, Sharon and their three children: Karl, Kirby and Kendall,” the statement read.

“Sonny fell while working during the day on New Year's Eve in New Orleans and fractured his hip. He was hospitalized and underwent hip surgery; unfortunately, complications arose. He fought valiantly but was unable to overcome his injuries.”

The Smart family requested prayers for others who also lost their lives on New Year's Day.

“Additionally, they ask for your continued prayers for those affected by the tragic events that occurred in the early hours of New Year's Day. The Smart family treasures everyone's thoughts and prayers and now prays for God's comfort, strength and guidance.”

Sonny Smart played college football at Samford University, where he and his wife, Sharon, were both graduates. A devoted supporter of Georgia football, Sonny was a regular presence at Bulldogs games, often celebrating on the field at Sanford Stadium with the team.
