The Georgia Bulldogs have been looking strong as the preseason No. 1 team in the nation, but their off-the-field issues have been a massive story. The Georgia Bulldogs have seen at least 25 arrests or citations since Jan. 15, 2023, when recruiting staffer Chandler LeCroy and offensive lineman Devin Willock died in a car crash.
When discussing the string of arrests and citations at the 2024 SEC Media Days, Georgia Bulldogs head coach Kirby Smart explained how it feels to see members of the program in the news for the wrong reasons.
"The incidents that we've had off the field areonot somethinghthat we condone. It's very unfortunate — disappointing, I guess, is the best word. I always talk about process and outcomes. I talked about that with wins and losses that we try not to base things on the outcomes of wins and losses. In this situation, the outcomes are very disappointing," he said.
With the season about six weeks away, Kirby Smart also addressed whether there will be suspensions as a result of the careless driving situations.
"We'll have suspensions coming out of some of these. I think everybody wants to know, what game and are they suspended? That's probably an important thing in terms of the discipline, the culture that they get to experience. We've done more as far as I know. There's not one team in the country that's ever suspended a player for traffic violations... Our process and the things we put in place, I feel very strongly about. We do as much or more education as anybody in the country," Smart said, via Online Athens.
This has been an ongoing story, as Georgia Bulldogs have been arrested and/or cited for driving infractions more than any other college.
What should we expect from the Georgia Bulldogs this season?
The Georgia Bulldogs had an outstanding season last year. They were undefeated until they lost to the Alabama Crimson Tide in the SEC Championship Game and were eliminated from the College Football Playoff picture. However, some key pieces, such as quarterback Carson Beck, returned for the 2024 college football season, so there is a lot of excitement surrounding Smart's program.
According to DraftKings Sportsbook, the Bulldogs are +320 favorites to win the national championship, which is the best odds of any college football team right now. It's the national championship or bust in Athens.
