Former First Team All-America and Dallas Cowboys player Ryan Switzer has been promoted from wide receivers coach to interim head coach of Tulsa following Kevin Wilson's dismissal. Tulsa is 3-8 on the season and 1-6 in American Athletic Conference, and with no hopes left of the season, Wilson's firing was no surprise.
As for Switzer, it will be the first time that he will lead the team as head coach when Tulsa faces the Florida Atlantic Owls this week before wrapping up their season.
Following the news, fans reacted, with many wishing him well and highlighted his previous experience.
"Deserves it. The brightest spots on the team this season has been the WRs," one fan commented.
"Ex Cowboy. Good for him!," another wrote.
"Steelers legend!," one said.
Some want the program to hire him as the permanent head coach soon.
"Y’all better hire him as a head coach I love that man," one added.
"We cheering for him and yall!! We love that man I hope yall hire him for head coach," another wrote.
Will Ryan Switzer be promoted to full time head coach?
On Sunday, ESPN's Pete Thamel reported that Ryan Switzer has accepted interim role with Tulsa. But there have been no reports about whether the role will continue next season, which means it's the sixth open head coach role in the AAC.
One of the reasons behind promoting Switzer could be his good work in coaching the receivers, who are the lone bright spots for the time this season.
Moreover, Switzer brings good amount of experience as a player. It wasn't long before he retired in 2021 after playing for the Cleveland Browns.
Switzer is best known for his role as a wide receiver with North Carolina between 2013-16. He was two times a First-team All-American (2013, 2015) and three times First-team All-ACC (2013, 2015, 2016). He also made the Third-team All-ACC in 2014.
Ryan Switzer was hired as wide receivers coach in 2023, and after just one season, he's getting the interim role, with the chance to convert it to a full time one.
