Former Florida coach Steve Spurrier has offered his candid opinions on American gun laws following the Apalachee High School shooting. The mass shooting incident, which claimed the lives of four people, has intensified the debates on firearm regulation in the United States.

In his appearance on the latest edition of the football podcast show, “Inside the Huddle,” Spurrier called for stricter gun control in the country.

“Why in the world in America are you eligible to walk into a gun store and buy an AR-15 rifle?” Spurrier asked.
“They should have a sign, ‘If you need a gun for mass school shootings, here’s your AR-15. We’ll give you a discount.’ Why don’t they just put that sign up there? That’s the only thing they’re used for,” Spurrier said. “You don’t need them for self-defense.”

Steve Spurrier sees further incidents if gun control laws aren't stricken

With a series of mass shootings recorded over the last few years, especially in schools and malls, Steve Spurrier does not see the situation getting better if new firearm regulations don’t come into place.

“We sit here and say blah, blah, blah,” Spurrier said. “We’re messed up in America to allow sick people to have these guns. And it ain’t going to stop. It ain’t going to stop until they get all these guns out of the way.”

His remarks have added fuel to the ongoing national debate surrounding the regulation of firearms. However, the national championship-winning coach is okay with citizens possessing different types of handguns for self-defense.

"You can carry a six-shooter, protect yourself, which we’re all for,” Spurrier said. "But these AR-15s are for mass shootings in the schools, and we sit here and allow it to happen in America. Makes me sick. All right, I’ve said my piece.”

One of the victims of the Georgia shooting, Richard Aspinwall, was a teacher at Apalachee High School and the defensive coordinator of the football team. His connection to the tragedy made Steve Spurrier’s comments about gun control even more personal.
