Boise State Broncos star Ashton Jeanty continued his impressive form during his team's 28-7 win against the Hawai'i Rainbow Warriors in Week 7. He registered for 217 yards on 31 carries and scored one touchdown, solidifying his claim for the Heisman Trophy, which he is currently favored by Fox Sports to win (+160).
During an appearance on the "Outta Pocket with RGIII" podcast, Colorado Buffaloes two-way star Travis Hunter, who is also in contention for the Heisman, discussed both his and Jeanty's chances of winning the award.
"Y'all see Ashton Jeanty, but it's not like we haven't seen a running back that's good. We haven't seen a player that plays both ways," Hunter said. "I'ma keep saying that. He has 95 carries for 1,000 yards. If I had 95 catches, how many yards do you think I'd have?
"If I had 95 targets on defense, what do you think I'd have? … he got double the touches I got on the offensive side of the ball, and I still have defensive stats that's still crazy, and we're only in Week 6. I'm not gonna argue about it."
College football fans on X did not take too kindly to the Colorado star's comments about Ashton Jeanty and argued that his comments would only harm his own chances of winning the Heisman Trophy in the long run.
"He is taking on Deion's attitude and it is going to cost him the Heisman," one fan said.
Some fans pointed out that Jeanty playing for G5 school Boise State would make more people root for the underdog.
"Everyone roots for the humble but fun group of 5-star," one fan said.
"Jeanty FC has never been more up," another fan said.
"Jeanty the best back we seen in the last 5-6 years," one fan said.
Ashton Jeanty shades Travis Hunter's statistics
In six games played this season, Ashton Jeanty has registered 1,248 yards on 126 carries (9.9 yards per carry) resulting in 17 touchdowns. He is on course to break the long-standing record held by former college football great, Barry Sanders, who tallied 2,628 yards resulting in 37 touchdowns in 1988 winning him the Heisman Trophy while playing for the Oklahoma State Cowboys.
Travis Hunter, meanwhile, has been stellar on both sides of the ball, tallying 587 yards on 49 receptions resulting in six touchdowns on the offensive side of the ball. On the defensive side of the ball, he has registered two interceptions, one forced fumble and 18 total tackles.
While Travis Hunter has the advantage of playing for a team fueled by the Deion Sanders hype train, which garners a lot of media and fan interest, fans have increasingly started to keep tabs on Ashton Jeanty as his incredible form continues unabated.
Travis Hunter also missed the second half of the Colorado Buffaloes' 31-28 loss to the Kansas State Wildcats due to a shoulder injury and did not play in the second half of the game. Deion Sanders confirmed that Hunter would play against the Arizona Wildcats in week 8 action to keep the Heisman race going.
