Mike Elko lost his cool following a controversial officiating call against Texas on Saturday. The Texas A&M coach couldn’t believe a targeting call was overturned after review.
Late in the second quarter of the rivalry clash, Texas safety Andrew Mukuba was flagged for targeting after hitting Jabre Barber, but the call was overturned on replay review. The reversal left Aggies coach Elko visibly frustrated with the official’s decision.
Following the review of the play, which allowed him to remain in the game and deny Texas A&M a first down, Mike Elko was seen furious on the sideline. The coach stormed out energetically to confront the officials, demanding an explanation for the controversial decision.
The antics of the coach on the sideline led to criticism from fans. Here's a look at some of the reactions online:
"Him and Kirby need to start a fat crybaby bitch club," one tweeted.
Other reactions followed:
"Bro found out the all you can eat buffet ends at 8, and he’s not gonna make it in time," a fan wrote.
"He’s begging for a targeting call. He’s in full panic mode," another fan wrote.
"He’s bought into the culture," another fan wrote.
Mike Elko discusses where the game was lost
Texas A&M suffered a 17-7 loss to Texas on Saturday, denying the Aggies a chance to play in the SEC championship game. Following the game at Kyle Field, Mike Elko cited the areas where his team didn't perform well as he reflected on the disappointing loss.
“Defensively, just not good enough in the run game,” Elko said after the game. “Way too many rushing yards, didn't win the line of scrimmage, didn't really fit things particularly well.
“We weren't good enough on third down, didn't do the things we needed to do to get off the field but I thought we showed tremendous heart and fight to continue to battle and gave ourselves a lot of chances in the second half to win with just grit and toughness." (0:33)
Texas A&M’s only touchdown of the game came through the defense. Will Lee III intercepted Quinn Ewers’ pass in the red zone and returned it for a 93-yard touchdown. That showed how much the offense was ineffective in the game.
“Offensively, we lost the line of scrimmage all night,” Elko said. “We weren't able to get anything going. Really disappointing, and we just didn't play well enough on offense at all to have any chance of having success.” (1:00)
It was a pretty good campaign for Texas A&M in Mike Elko’s first season in charge. The Aggies now look more like a contender in the conference despite the increased competition, an identity they’ve struggled to claim over the last couple of years.
