Oklahoma Sooners fans are calling for coach Brent Venables’ dismissal after a crushing 34-3 loss to Steve Sarkisian’s Texas Longhorns on Saturday. Texas (6-0) ranked No. 1, overcame a slow start to dominate their Red River rivals.
By the end, the 2024 edition of the Red River Rivalry wasn’t even a contest, with Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers leading a 21-point surge that put the game out of reach.
For Oklahoma, it was a frustrating day, and fans took to social media to express their anger. One fan wrote on X:

“No offense, horrific special teams, decent defense. “The Brent Venables experience. Fire this clown.”
“@OU_Football needs to fire Venables right now before it gets more humiliating for them!,” another wrote.
“Brent Venables cannot coach varsity intercollegiate football.,” one wrote.
The frustration continued, with one fan pointing out:
“Venables ain’t a good head coach. A good head coach would have benched [Michael] Hawkins the second half. You guys are cooked,” another fan wrote.
“Venables should be ashamed of himself with no game plan! I think his plan was for Hawkins to run and it was pitiful!!,” one wrote.
The harshest criticism came from one fan who compared Venables to former coach John Blake, who went 12-22 in three years with the Sooners.
“True but Venables better wake up. This is on him. If this continues this will be his last year. And I am confident this will continue. Damn the a doesn’t even know he can’t throw the ball away on 4th down. John Blake had better coached teams than this,” a fan tweeted.
With fans demanding change, the pressure on Venables is reaching a boiling point.
Oklahoma’s coach Brent Venables’ job security
Oklahoma’s season took a hit with their 4-2 record after this loss, and now they'll need a strong finish to stay in the hunt for the 12-team College Football Playoff.
After the game, Venables took responsibility for the heavy defeat. (Start at 1:21)
“It starts with me,” Venables said after the game. “I’ve got to do a better job getting these guys prepared and ready to play.”
The defeat has also raised questions about head coach Brent Venables’ job security, as he now holds a 20-12 record in his three years with the Sooners. While the defense has improved under his leadership, the offense continues to struggle, and Saturday’s game only added to those concerns.
Venables has faced some heat over starting true freshman Michael Hawkins Jr. instead of the highly-recruited Jackson Arnold, leaving fans and analysts questioning the offensive strategy.
“We, obviously, haven’t been very good all season, Venables said at 5:38. “We have to do a better job putting guys in a place to be successful.”
His record against Texas isn’t helping either. Though he secured a win against the Longhorns last year, he’s now 1-2 in this rivalry, with Oklahoma being outscored 83-3 in the other two contests.
Next week’s matchup with South Carolina will give them a chance to turn things around.
