The No. 11-ranked Clemson Tigers (6-2, 5-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) suffered a surprising 33-21 defeat against the Louisville Cardinals (6-3, 4-2) on Saturday. Clemson was poised to make a run for the ACC Championship, but with the loss to Louisville, it now looks less likely.

Things got tense with six minutes left in the fourth quarter. The Tigers were trailing 26-14 and a review was called that could have helped them. However, it did not go their way which upset the crowd. As a result, fans started to throw trash onto the field.

After the video went viral on X, online fans took jabs not just at Clemson, but Texas and Tennessee as well. Texas and Tennessee fans also threw trash on the field earlier this season.

Other fans were more direct about their feelings on the incident. Some expressed amusement, while others expressed anger and frustration.

What play during the Clemson game caused fans to throw trash on the field?

Trash was thrown on the field in the fourth quarter shortly after the Tigers had scored a touchdown to cut the deficit to 26-14 with six minutes remaining. They knew they needed to score two more times, so they lined up for an onside kick. The kick made several low bounces before players from both teams jumped on it at around midfield.

When the players got up, both squads claimed that they recovered the ball. The officials initially ruled it was the Cardinals' ball, but before they snapped it, a formal review was initiated. After a few minutes, the referees announced that the call on the field stood, which resulted in fans throwing trash.
