Billy Napier’s future at Florida fell under threat following the disappointing loss to in-state rival Miami in Week 1. The coach now holds an 11-15 record in Gainesville, which hasn’t impressed many fans, and many have called for his firing despite the offseason support.
An X page called Message Board Geniuses, which shares comments from message boards and fan forums, shared a rumor about Urban Meyer expressing interest in taking on the Gators interim head coach role. Meyer's potential return comes as Florida actively pursues high-profile candidates like Lane Kiffin, Mark Stoops and Lincoln Riley for the permanent position.

The thought of Meyer returning to Gainesville more than a decade after leaving the program is laughable to rival fans. The coach’s last college football job was at Ohio State, and he left the Buckeyes in 2018. Here's a look at some of the reactions online:
Here are other reactions online:
"None of those coaches will be at Florida," a fan wrote.
"Is UF a better job than what Lane has at ole Miss????" another fan wrote.
"Urban had no desire coaching this generation of kids," a fan commented.
"So what if they win their next 5 games? They still going to fire the guy?" another fan commented.
Urban Meyer understands the pressure of Florida job
After Florida’s loss to Miami, former coach Urban Meyer admitted that watching the program struggle in such a situation was painful. Having experienced the intense pressure that comes with coaching the program, he understands all too well how quickly expectations can mount.
“Gainesville, it’s a tough, tough job,” Meyer said on "The Triple Option" podcast. “It’s a great job. It’s one of the top five jobs in the country.
“You’ve got everything you need. You’ve got a recruiting base that’s second to none, and you’ve got a great stadium, you’ve got a great fanbase, you’ve got a great student body. You’ve got it all. But I’ll tell you what, Gainesville is a tough town to live in when you’re the coach at Florida.”
Meyer coached the Gators from 2005 to 2010, leading them to one of the most dominant and successful eras in their history. The program won two national championships and two SEC titles under his leadership.
Billy Napier is not distracted by the noise
Despite the mounting pressure, Billy Napier is choosing to focus on what's next. In his press conference on Wednesday, the coach was clear that he's moved on from the disappointing Week 1 loss to the Hurricanes.
“We can flip the script and kind of move on,” Napier said Wednesday night. “It’s so key, whether you have failure or success, that it doesn’t affect your attitude or approach.
"We’re battling human nature on both ends of the spectrum. Sometimes you win and you’re sky-high and you get to thinking you’re better than you are, and sometimes you have failure and you’re getting beat up."
The Gators have arguably the toughest schedule in college football in 2024, putting further pressure on Napier. Following the loss to Miami, the team still has to play Tennessee, Georgia, Texas, LSU, Ole Miss and Florida State.
