Florida head coach Billy Napier has officially announced that Graham Mertz will be the starting QB for their Week 3 showdown against the Texas A&M Aggies. Despite DJ Lagway's stellar performance during their 45-7 victory against Samford, Napier is putting his faith in a veteran star.

Lagway is still a freshman who is settling down in his collegiate career. So it is understandable that Billy Napier wants to rely on his veteran QB for a crucial game. However, the head coach also revealed that DJ Lagway could potentially have a weekly role on Florida's offense following his week 2 performance.

"I just think it proves what we thought in the beginning. This guy (DJ Lagway) was a Gatorade National Player of the Year. He's one of the best players in the entire country," Napier said.

"We're going to stay on course, and much like we described in the beginning, we'll have a plan for DJ every week going forward," he added.

Mertz is yet to showcase his value for the team this season. The game is scheduled for Saturday, September 14 at the Ben Hill Griffin Stadium. It is expected to kick off at 3:30 p.m. ET.

So far this season, Mertz has only played in one game against the Miami Hurricanes. He recorded 91 passing yards along with one interception.

Last season, the team failed to qualify for the bowl games. Thus, Mertz will be looking for redemption this year, where they at least qualify for the postseason matchups.
