Florida State coaching job update: Mike Norvell to likely make massive move amid firing rumors

While there are rumors Florida State firing Mike Norvell after a 2-10 season, the coach is preparing for the 2025 campaign as if he'll be in charge. According to reports, he is set to hire a new defensive coordinator.

As per WarChant.com via the On3 network, Florida State is bringing in Nebraska’s Tony White as its new defensive coordinator. This move comes after former DC Adam Fuller was among several staff members dismissed after the Seminoles dropped to 1-9.

White might not be the only coach the Seminoles will poach from the Cornhuskers. According to a report from Greg Smith of Rivals.com, defensive line coach Terrance Knighton is also expected to join White at Florida State.

What Tony White offers Mike Norvell and Florida State

Following a disappointing season for Florida State, White brings in new ideas that can bring some change on the defensive side in Tallahassee.

Nebraska ranked 19th nationally in total defense this season, allowing an average of 5.39 yards per play and conceding 30 total touchdowns. Additionally, the defense gave up only 303.5 total yards per game, which is the program's best total defense performance since 2009.

Another major hire for Norvell

Florida State also added UCF's Gus Malzahn as the new offensive coordinator over the weekend. Following a 4-8 season with the Knights, Malzahn resigned from his role as the head coach of the program to take up an assistant role with the Seminoles.

The combination of Malzahn and White can help the Seminoles improve on both sides of the ball next season.

Norvell led the program to an undefeated regular season in 2023, controversially missing out on the College Football Playoff. However, the Seminoles were shadows of themselves this season, recording only two wins. With Malzahn and White coming in, Norvell is hoping the program can recover in 2025.
