Deuce Knight, a four-star quarterback prospect according to 247sports.com, has committed to play for the Auburn Tigers. The arrival of Knight may be what Hugh Freeze's team needs to help them at the quarterback position, something that has let them down this season.

However, there is some controversy with the jersey number that Knight may want to wear with the Tigers. Throughout his high school career, Knight wore number two. This is something that he could wear while with Auburn. However, Auburn legend and former NFL quarterback Cam Newton has other ideas:

"For me, it’s a f*ck No ... in this day and age, everything's earned. You've got to earn it. And what you did in high school, nobody gives a f**k in College."

Newton spent one season with the Tigers in 2010, in which he wore the number two jersey. That season was successful for both the team and him. On an individual level, Newton threw for 2,854 yards and 30 touchdowns in a season where Newton won the Heisman Trophy.

These performances made the Tigers one of the best teams in the country, and he was able to lead Auburn to the national championship game. In the game, Auburn were able to defeat the Oregon Ducks to give them their second national championship in school history. This was also done with an unbeaten record.

For his performances that season, Newton has become the stuff of legend at Auburn, with a statue of him outside of their stadium.

For Newton, the next owner of the number two jersey (if there ever will be another wearer) needs to earn it. It has much significance for the program and its fans, so it can not be something that is just given out to whoever wants it.

Knight on his commitment to Auburn

The recruitment of Knight came down to a two-team race between two SEC programs: the Tigers and the Ole Miss Rebels. In the end, he chose the Tigers. Knight recently spoke about what happened when he committed to Auburn and had to tell Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin.

"Coach (Lane) Kiffin called my dad the morning of signing day and having to tell him I already did this, I'm going there (Auburn). It was good. I told him myself I was going to Auburn, I felt more comfortable over there. You've got to be a man about it," Knight said.

Knight would have been a good steal for the Rebels, who want to find future quarterbacks when current QB Jaxson Dart decides to declare for the NFL draft.

However, the Tigers' QB room is a lot thinner in terms of talent, so deciding to declare for Auburn may be the best way to get him on the field sooner.
