Lane Kiffin and Nick Saban butted their heads when they coached together at the Alabama Crimson Tide. While the seven-time national championship-winning coach wanted to instill discipline in his student-athletes, he realized that the young coaches had different sets of rules that they wanted to follow.
Despite their back and forth, the two created unforgettable memories which the former Alabama QB Blake Sims shared on the "McCready and Siskey Podcast."
Blake Sims said that after Alabama won the national championship title in 2009, he announced to Nick Saban that he was going to Tennessee.
“Me and Lane were sitting side by side and I called Coach Saban. And said, I’m leaving. I’m going to Tennessee."
But Sims received a shock of his own when Kiffin told him that he would be going back to the USC Trojans.
“So as he’s saying that I’ll look up on ESPN breaking news Lane Kevin goes, I’m like yeah, of course, I’m looking it on TV right now,” Sims mentioned.
Blake Sims also said Kiffin often tried to provoke Saban by making changes in practice. It did not align with Saban's goal, who always got "kinda mad."
“You’re dealing with a head coach that takes every moment serious and you got Lane where he takes nothing serious,” Sims said.
Lane Kiffin thanked Nick Saban for always supporting him in the early days of his career
When Nick Saban was appointed as the leader of the football program, he rekindled the careers of many other coaches. Some of his greatest disciples are Lane Kiffin and Steve Sarkisian. Lane Kiffin coached at Alabama for three years as the offensive coordinator and is now the leader of a team that can clinch a spot in this year's College Football Playoff.
While talking to the SportsCenter, Kiffin talked about the lifetime opportunity he received from Nick Saban. He said:
"His career is amazing, and I'm just blessed for the opportunity that he gave me," Kiffin said Monday on SportsCenter. "I wouldn't be here today without him. He took a chance on me and really opened a lot of doors from there, and I was able to meet a lot of amazing people, players, coaches throughout those three years. Really grateful for him."
Lane Kiffin quickly became one of the most important figures in the college football world. He was the finalist for the Broyles Award and received head coaching ranks at Florida Atlantic. With Saban, he won two national championship titles and also earned a 2015 College Football Playoff title.
