Marcus Freeman has been the talk of the town after the coach's excellent run with the No. 5 Notre Dame. The Fighting Irish have made it to the College Football Playoff semifinals, and there have been rumors floating around Freeman potentially moving to coach in the NFL next season.
Amid Freeman's impressive job at Notre Dame, former Eagles defensive lineman Mike Golic has offered his two cents on how the coach has been the right fit for the Fighting Irish.
"For as much as people who want to say they're not relevant for not winning a title since 1988," Golic said on Friday's episode of the "GoJo and Golic" show. "Notre Dame Football will always be relevant even when they didn't win. But for the players and coaches now, their excitement is cool to see. They definitely have the right man in Marcus Freeman."
Freeman's Notre Dame took down Georgia 23-10 in the College Football Playoff quarterfinal Sugar Bowl game on Thursday. The Fighting Irish will square off against No. 4 Penn State in the CFP semifinal on Thursday.
Notre Dame last won a national title in the 1988 season, but there is hope that Freeman can lead the program to glory this season.
Marcus Freeman addresses rumors of potential NFL interest
Since a few NFL teams are looking for head coaches, Marcus Freeman has been among the top candidates in the spotlight. However, the coach plans to remain at Notre Dame for the long haul.
On Friday, Freeman appeared on "SportsCenter" to address the speculation about him potentially leaving the Fighting Irish to coach in the pro league.
“I don’t know when they announced it, I can’t remember, but about a week or two ago, they announced another long contract (for me) here at Notre Dame,” Freeman said. “So, I don’t think we have anything to worry about.”
Freeman signed an extension at Notre Dame in December that will keep him tied down to the program through the 2030 season. His new deal also came with a pay rise that bumped his salary from $7 million to $9 million per year.
