Steve Sarkisian’s decision to bench Quinn Ewers has received a bittersweet reaction, especially as the Texas Longhorns (6-1, 2-1 SEC) suffered a massive 30-15 loss against the Georgia Bulldogs (6-1, 4-1). Amid the chatter, former Eagles star Mike Golic shared his feelings regarding Texas' tough outing against Georgia.
Mike said the move to bench Ewers took him aback on his show “GoJo and Golic,” as Arch Manning failed to deliver as expected.
"Man, I was surprised that he did it," said Golic. “For six passes, Arch was three in six, had the fumble- the bad fumble, he was getting chased just as Ewers was in the entire game by the Georgia defense.”
He pointed out that Steve Sarkisian likely felt the need for a spark in the team. With Ewers struggling early on—completing just 6 of 12 passes for 17 yards and turning the ball over twice—it was Arch Manning’s time to step in.
However, he praised Georgia’s defense, noting that their stifling performance was responsible for Texas' early struggles. He highlighted how Georgia’s pressure kept Texas off balance, saying:
"Georgia just took the toll and definitely had Texas on their heels."
Golic stressed that Texas possesses an impressive quarterback room, and the players will understand Sarkisian’s decision and continue to support both Manning and Ewers.
What stopped Steve Sarkisian's Texas Longhorns from winning against Georgia?
The Texas Longhorns' loss to the Georgia Bulldogs in Week 8 was due to several key factors. First, the undefeated Texas struggled to protect the ball, committing four costly turnovers, including two fumbles by quarterback Quinn Ewers.
The Longhorns' rushing attack was also completely shut down. Sarkisian's men managed just 29 rushing yards on 27 carries, averaging a mere 1.1 yards per rush. Their inability to establish the ground game put extra pressure on the passing game, limiting the offense’s overall effectiveness.
Lastly, Georgia running back Trevor Etienne stepped up his game, scoring three rushing touchdowns and helping to control the game's tempo. Even though Georgia's QB Carson Beck struggled, Etienne’s efforts gave the Bulldogs enough firepower to secure a 30-15 victory.
