Former ESPN analyst Robert Griffin III was one of the former Heisman winners to attend Saturday's ceremony in New York which saw Colorado's two-way star Travis Hunter win the prestigious accolade. Griffin III won the Heisman Trophy in 2011 for the Baylor Bears, becoming the only player in the program's history to hold that distinction.
On Tuesday, Heisman finalist Dillon Gabriel's fiancee Zo Caswell posted a heartfelt message for the Oregon quarterback, appreciating his feats in making the Heisman podium in New York.
She posted on Instagram,
"Heisman weekend in NYC🥂☺️ @dillongabriel I can’t express enough how proud I am of you. Going to events like this reminds me of how incredible your journey as a player and a person has been. You inspire me everyday. I am so honored to be by your side and share this life with you❤️," Caswell wrote.
Robert Griffin's wife, Grete Griffin, whom he married in 2018, issued a reaction to Caswell's message in the comment section.
"So happy for you all!!! Congrats again," Grete wrote.
Robert Griffin III and his wife defend Travis Hunter and his fiancee
Travis Hunter's fiancee Leanna Lenee has been involved in controversy ever since a clip of her seemingly looking upset at the Heisman winner for taking pictures with fans before the Heisman ceremony went viral. A further clip of Lenee apparently being prompted by Coach Prime, Deion Sanders, to hug Hunter during the ceremony further lengthened the discourse surrounding the couple.
On Tuesday, during an appearance on the "Kay Adams Show," Robert Griffin revealed that he and his wife, Grete Griffin, had given a piece of advice to Hunter and Lenee regarding the backlash from fans about their relationship (4:30).
“And mob mentality, Kay. You know how this goes. Mob mentality can turn something that’s nothing into something," Robert Griffin said. "So our advice to them was just to continue to love each other, make private whatever you want to make private. But I think people giving exposes in their relationship, especially in the national media, is unnecessary.
Griffin further sided with Hunter who also publicly backed his fiancee in a Twitch video on Monday.
“What you need to know is that Travis Hunter loves his fiancée. And I hear a lot of people saying guys got to make their own mistakes, they got to do this, they got to do that," Griffin said. "Well, I just think that the assumption that his relationship is a mistake is already bad in the first place. We shouldn’t be diving into the personal lives of these players when they have a loving fiancée, wife, or girlfriend,” he explained.
As a former Heisman winner, Robert Griffin and his wife know the publicity that comes with the fame and have shown their class by advising Travis Hunter and Leanna Lenee on how to deal with controversy while also being there for the other Heisman finalists.
