Bill Belichick has been hired to be the next head coach of the North Carolina Tar Heels. It was reported Wednesday he signed a five-year contract estimated to be worth $50 million. This move was a bit of a surprise as many pundits did not expect Belichick to transition to college football at this stage of his career.
On Friday, 'The Triple Option' was covering the road to the Army vs. Navy matchup on Saturday. On the show, several guests appeared to discuss happenings in the college football world.
One of those guests was Robert Griffin III. RGIII won the Heisman Trophy with Baylor in 2011 and was the second overall pick in the 2012 NFL draft, taken by the Washington Redskins. He went on to have an eight-year NFL career that was severely impacted by injuries.
Griffin III discussed his Heisman win but was also asked about Belichick entering the college football landscape. He talked about how every player he had talked to who talked about Belichick said "We won, but it wasn't fun."
"Bill Belichick every player who has ever played for him, you know we won but it wasn’t fun you can’t do that in college it got to be fun."
"If Chapel Bill comes to the Tar Heels right and he bring the fun or the aspect of fun he can do, as much fun as he can have then he can successful but if he goes in there are run it like an NFL program and its Patriot’s way that’s where I think they will be a consistent winner but if he brings the fun, they can win National Championship."
Belichick will bring his NFL experience to college football
Bill Belichick had a tremendous career in the NFL, famously winning six Super Bowls with the New England Patriots during his tenure has coach from 2000 to 2023.
Although Belichick had a tremendous amount of success in the NFL, RGIII believes he needs to adapt as a college coach. He needs to be able to bring the fun as well as the tactics to get players to buy into his program.
