Shedeur Sanders is expected to be among the top two quarterbacks selected in the NFL Draft. However, not everyone is on board with the bottom teams taking the Colorado Buffaloes' quarterback in April. Former New York Jets scout Daniel Kelly is among the critics of such a move.
According to Kelly, the Cleveland Browns, Tennessee Titans, Las Vegas Raiders and New York Giants shouldn’t go after Shedeur Sanders. The main reasons he gives are that those teams struggled to protect the quarterback and that Sanders was sacked at a high rate during his college career.
“As a former #NFL Scout, it would be an absolute disaster if Shedeur Sanders was the quarterback on the Browns, Titans, Raiders or Giants in 2025," Kelly wrote on X.
The former scout went on to explain the reasoning behind his statement:
"The Browns, Titans, Raiders and Giants all rank in the top-10 for “most sacks allowed by team 2024” (Stat Muse) https://statmuse.com/nfl/ask/most-sacks-allowed-by-team-2024-to-2024… and Shedeur Sanders was the most sacked quarterback in college football (FBS) the past two seasons getting sacked 94 times."
Kelly wrote about how Sanders was sacked in his days at Jackson State too and the trend continued when Sanders got to the Buffs. The former scout explained how the stats reflected that the systems at both programs did not have an impact.
"The only thing that changed when Sanders went from the FCS up to a higher level of competition in the FBS is his sack rate almost doubled," Kelly said. "Sanders has been a sacked machine in college football and these four NFL teams have been sack factories. I don’t like the draft math.”
While Shedeur Sanders and Miami’s Cam Ward are considered the top quarterbacks in the 2025 NFL Draft, it’s also believed that they wouldn’t have made the top 5 at the position in 2024.
Do Shedeur Sanders and Cam Ward take too long with the football?
Determining if a quarterback takes too long with the football is risky business. For example, Lamar Jackson and Jalen Hurts took the most time before throwing the football in 2024. Yet it’s hard to argue against the notion that the extra time also allowed them to create some big plays.
Sanders and Ward tend to hang on to the football while trying to create big plays. Sanders was sacked 152 times in four years while Ward endured 156 sacks in five years.
Shedeur Sanders led the nation the last two years with 52 and 42 sacks. By any measure, that’s not ideal. Ward was only sacked 22 times in 2024. However, one of those was a strip fumble against Georgia Tech that cost the Hurricanes a chance at a game-winning drive.
Still, the amount of sacks both have taken is higher than what NFL teams might like to see. For example, Caleb Williams, another quarterback considered to take too long with the football, was sacked 85 times in three seasons at Oklahoma and USC. His transition to the NFL hasn’t been easy and he leads the NFL with 67 sacks in 2024.
