With the College Football Playoff in the semifinal stage, the season is starting to wind down. Media pundits are slowly shifting the focus of their content from the current season to the next.
Will Compton, a former NFL linebacker and co-host of the Barstool Sports podcast, "Bussin’ With the Boys," is one of those analysts looking forward to next season. On his X account Tuesday, Compton listed young quarterbacks who will be carrying college football for the next couple of years.
Curiously, he listed the current starting quarterback from his alma mater, Nebraska's Dylan Raiola.
It did not take long before the social media world came in and preyed on his take:
Compton had to go back and have Raiola’s back, posting:
If we place Dylan Raiola's stats beside those of the quarterbacks listed by Compton, DJ Lagway's numbers seem to be the only ones comparable to what he put up.
We have to look at context and situations, though, as Matt Rhule's wide receiver group wasn't necessarily a stellar one. With Raiola's best target only putting up 587 yards and not being able to easily separate, it would explain his rough season with turnovers.
Matt Rhule makes transfer portal signings to aid Dylan Raiola's development
Nebraska coach Matt Rhule sought to address his issues with receivers in the transfer portal, and the offensive line came up with a haul. He landed two Kentucky Wildcats in Hardley Gilmore IV and Dane Key, along with Nyziah Hunter, a freshman who starred in the California Golden Bears offense.
Over on the defensive line, he snagged tackle Elijah Pritchett, who will be able to contribute right away and protect Dylan Raiola.
The aptly named Key could be the crucial piece to Raiola's development. If he lines up on the outside with Hunter on the other side, Raiola could use that arm strength to fire off long bombs, and Gilmore could be that slot receiver that will be his safety net. With Pritchett also protecting him, his accuracy will surely improve and his turnovers decrease.
