Coach Ryan Day and the Ohio State Buckeyes are deep in the midst of the College Football Playoff run. While he still needs to focus on his upcoming games, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is reportedly eyeing several college head coaches as possible replacements for Mike McCarthy.
On Thursday morning, former NFL quarterback Dan Orlovsky appeared on "Get Up" to discuss the rumor that Texas coach Steve Sarkisian is someone the Cowboys are looking at interviewing.
However, Orlovsky believes Sarkisian is not the only college head coach Jones is looking at. He thinks Day and Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman could also be interviewed.
"I think many teams in the NFL are going to want to talk to some of the college football coaches in the College Football Playoff that are left if they lose," Orlovsky said.
"I don't think it's just Sark. I think teams and the Cowboys could want to talk to Ryan Day. I think they could want to talk to Marcus Freeman. The way the NFL is going is trending a little bit toward the younger coach."
The Dallas Cowboys are rumored to consider replacing Mike McCarthy after finishing 7-10 this season and missing the playoffs. McCarthy's contract expired on Wednesday, but the organization has exclusive negotiating rights through January 14th. So, if they cannot find another head coach to replace McCarthy, they may rehire him.
Ryan Day's reputation has improved drastically in recent weeks
While Ryan Day is now being considered for the position of NFL head coach, he was almost fired at Ohio State. In the regular season finale, the Buckeyes fell 13-10 to unranked Michigan. The loss removed them from the Big Ten Championship Game, forcing them to compete in the first round of the College Football Playoff.
At the time, many questioned whether Day could get his team through big games. However, since then, the Buckeyes have looked like the favorites to win the national championship.
They defeated Tennessee 42-17 in round one, and Oregon 41-21 in the CFP quarterfinal. On Friday, they will play the Texas Longhorns in the Cotton Bowl. The game kicks off at 7:30 p.m. ET.
