Former New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick emerged as a shock contender for the vacant North Carolina Tar Heels job on Thursday after ESPN revealed that he had interviewed with the program. The job only recently became vacant after UNC fired Mack Brown just before the end of the season, which finished with a 6-6 record.
With speculation about Belichick's coaching future in Chapel Hill going into overdrive, former NFL standout Antonio Brown trolled the legendary coach on an X post referencing his girlfriend, Jordon Hudson.
"I heard his girlfriend is a junior there #CTESPN," Brown tweeted.
Despite speculation about his future, Belichick and Hudson stepped out officially as a couple on the red carpet when they attended the American Museum of National History's 2024 Music Gala in New York on Thursday. The 24-year-old Hudson, who is a former cheerleader, started dating the legendary coach in 2021.
Bill Belichick was tabbed to succeed at North Carolina
During Friday's segment of "Get Up," outspoken ESPN analyst Paul Finebaum tabbed Bill Belichick to succeed in Chapel Hill should he take the North Carolina job, comparing college football to the NFL.
"I could see him (Bill Belichick) coaching in college next year. Chapel Hill is a very unique situation: the expectations aren’t the same as Georgia, Texas, and Alabama, they have a great infrastructure," Paul Finebaum said, adding, "If they are patient, I think he can turn that place around. Mack Brown almost got over the hump, but just quite couldn’t. Bill Belichick could easily do that."
"College football is very much like the NFL. The General Manager manages all the player personnel, the salaries, and the NIL. So Bill could be the coach and he can also make sure the infrastructure is set. I think it would be a home-run hire for North Carolina or anyone, quite frankly, in this part of the country.”
According to ESPN, Pittsburgh Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith, who is an alumnus of the institution, was the top target, but he declined the job and opted to continue in his role in the NFL. Tulane Greenwave coach Jon Sumrall will also interview for the job after the AAC championship game against the Army Black Knights.
The North Carolina Tar Heels job vacated by Mack Brown is perhaps the most lucrative open coaching job in college football and the appointment of Belichick would be a massive statement of intent from UNC.
