Former New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick will come into the 2024 season without a coaching role. However, this does not mean that he is completely out of football.
He is assisting the Washington Huskies. Under new coach Jedd Fisch (who replaced Kalen DeBoer), the Huskies have hired Belichick's son Stephen as defensive coordinator. This has led to Bill spending time with the Washington Huskies during their practices.
Bill spoke on "The Pat McAfee Show" Monday, explaining what he does at the practice:
“I’m just here to watch, and sometimes they ask me to look at something or what I think about this or that or whatever. Really, it’s been great.”
Belichick is essentially there as an advisory figure rather than in a leadership role, and he occasionally gives his opinions on what he sees. This is a massive contrast to what he was doing with the New England Patriots.
Another positive to Belichick's job with the Huskies is that he can spend more time with his son and in the sport. He spoke about this in more detail during his interview with Pat McAfee:
“It’s nice to just get back and watch some action going on in the field. Being around Steve, being around Jedd, they do a great job here at this program and it’s just fun to watch what’s going on and sitting in on some meetings and watch the players work…(I) look forward to following them during the year.”
Bill Belichick is not the only former NFL coach whose kids are involved with Fisch's program. The offensive coordinator is Brennan Carroll, the son of former USC Trojans and Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll. Their offensive quality control coach is Luke Del Rio, the son of Jack Del Rio, who was recently the defensive coordinator of the Washington Commanders.
The Washington Huskies make history
The Washington Huskies may need help this season if the preseason polling is to be believed. The Huskies ended the 2023 season as the No. 2 team, winning the Pac-12 and making it to the national championship game.
However, this season will not be the same. The Huskies are without star quarterback Michael Penix Jr., and the new-look Huskies will be playing their first season in the Big Ten.
The team has also made unwanted history. They have become the first team in 73 years to go from being the second-ranked team to an unranked team. The last program to do this was Army in 1951.
Washington will need to use all of the knowledge Belichick and Pete Carroll have if it is going to have a season anything like the previous one.
