Oregon Ducks quarterback Dillon Gabriel has led his team to much success this season. The Ducks won the Big Ten in their first season, going undefeated to do so. They are ranked No. 1 and are the top seed in the College Football Playoff and will open their attempt to win the national championship against the Ohio State Buckeyes in the Rose Bowl on Wednesday.
In preparation for this game, ESPN Max Olson compiled an oral history of Gabriel, created from the testimonies of his previous teammates from the multiple teams he has been on.
From this, we have learned many things about the Ducks quarterback, including his musical taste. Information about this comes from his former Oklahoma Sooners teammates.
The boombox
According to Sooners tight end Austin Stogner, Gabriel's love for music was clearly seen through the equipment he brought to the throwing sessions:
"He'd carry around that boom box speaker and blast that thing everywhere."
Gabriel listened to a lot of music, but what kind of music was preferred by the record-breaking quarterback?
EDM and "British rap"
His teammates said that there were two main types of music that Gabriel listened to. The first of these was EDM music, wide receiver Drake Stoops said. Gabriel's reaction to this kind of music made the sessions an enjoyable time.
"He'd be playing all his weird EDM songs, and he'd be dancing and all this s***. It just became just a very fun thing to be around," Stoops said.
But there was another style of music that Gabriel took a shine to.
" I don't know if he's still on it, but he had a UK rap stint that he was on. That was his thing. He always had that on repeat," wide receiver Nic Anderson said.
"He loved British rap. He thought he was one with the British culture because he listened to British rap," tight end Austin Stogner said.
The British music scene is one that is varied and unique. The British rap referred to by the Sooners players is likely to be what is known as "Grime Music" in the United Kingdom, a popular style of music that has heavy elements of rap and hip-hop.
Dillon Gabriel: Future DJ?
Finally, Stogner suggested an alternate future career for Dillon Gabriel:
"He's got an unlimited clip in there with different types of songs. He's going to have a strong career in the DJ world if football doesn't work out."
However, it looks like Gabriel is going to be staying in the world of football for a while. He is about to lead an Oregon Ducks side into the CFP, where they have a strong chance of winning it all. Succeed here, and the football career of Dillon Gabriel should only grow.
