Texas Longhorns quarterback Quinn Ewers has one more year of eligibility left. However, the signal-caller is projected to transition to the professional level and declare for the 2025 NFL draft. This season, Ewers has helped the Longhorns qualify for the 12-team College Football Playoff in their debut Southeastern Conference season.
But, according to On3's Pete Nakos, Ewers has been offered a record-breaking $6 million to not declare for the draft and instead enter the NCAA transfer portal. Reports have surfaced about possible tampering to keep the quarterback in college with multiple Power Four schools trying to entice Ewers.
His former teammate and wide receiver Johntay Cook II had a straightforward answer to reports about Quinn Ewers being offered $6 million. Cook, who played for two seasons for the Texas Longhorns and joined the Washington Huskies on Saturday, took shots at the quarterback with a social media post.
"wasting yall money fr," Cook wrote.
This season has been a roller coaster ride for Ewers. Apart from his injuries, he has also been inconsistent with his performance, recording 2,867 yards and 26 touchdowns for his team. Ewers will be Texas' QB1 during its CFP quarterfinal showdown against the Arizona State Sun Devils on Wednesday.
Johntay Cook spent two seasons playing with the quarterback. Even fans this season have urged Longhorns coach Steve Sarkisian to put faith in backup Arch Manning instead of Ewers, who did not have a great game during their SEC championship loss to the Georgia Bulldogs.
Dan Wetzel makes comparison between Quinn Ewers and Arch Manning
During his three-season stint with the Texas Longhorns, Quinn Ewers has helped the program win the Big 12 title and make two straight College Football Playoff appearances. Despite this, fans are not pleased with the signal-caller's performance throughout 2024.
Ahead of their Peach Bowl showdown against Arizona State, Yahoo Sports columnist Dan Wetzel talked about how Arch Manning might be better than Ewers and how Texas fans argue that he is not their best quarterback.
"If you ask the Texas fans, they are not sure Quinn Ewers is the best quarterback," Wetzel said. "Plenty of them are pretty convinced that he is not the best quarterback in their program. And there's a lot of Arch Manning hype. You know, Quinn Ewers is funny.
"It's the second trip he's led Texas to the playoffs and they are ready to run him out of town. He's not been brilliant. He's good, he's got a lot of experience, but he's not been a great player that you would have thought a No. 1 overall recruit has been."
The Texas vs. Arizona State Peach Bowl showdown is scheduled for Wednesday at 1 p.m. ET at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.
