Jeff Tedford was forced to resign from his position as head coach of the Fresno State Bulldogs due to ongoing health issues. He released a statement announcing his decision on Monday, which read:
"It is with sad emotions that following my recent medical check-up, it is clear that due to health concerns, my family and I have made the decision to step aside as Fresno State's head coach and allow someone else to lead the football program. I have a tremendous amount of pride and passion for Fresno State, and I understand the time and energy necessary to lead at a high level.
"The players, coaches and Bulldog supporters deserve the best. Unfortunately, I am not able to sustain the commitment needed to perform at the level needed to guide the program."
It marks Tedford's second time stepping down as head coach of the Bulldogs due to health problems, as he previously did so following the 2019 season.
In five seasons across two stints, he led Fresno State to a 45-22 record. In 16 seasons as a head coach at the collegiate level - which includes an 11-year stint leading the California Golden Bears - he has a record of 127-79.
With Tedford having to vacate his position due to health considerations, focus now turns to his potential successor. Here, we take a look at five potential replacements.
Top 5 candidates to replace Jeff Tedford
#1 Tim Skipper
Tim Skipper has been named the interim head coach of the Fresno State Bulldogs. He previously served as the assistant head coach and linebackers coach. With the season set to start in about a month-and-a-half, he remains the likeliest option to be head coach when things kick off.
#2 Chris Petersen
Chris Petersen represents a far more experienced option as he led the Boise State Broncos and Washington Huskies to a combined 147-38 record over 14 seasons. It is unclear, though, if he is interested in returning to coaching.
#3 Gary Patterson
Gary Patterson is another experienced former head coach. In 22 seasons leading the TCU Horned Frogs, he compiled an 181-79 record. He was reportedly forced out of the position and could be itching to return to the coaching ranks.
#4 Glenn Schumann
Glenn Schumann is likely a long shot, however, the Fresno State Bulldogs would be wise to give him a call. He has won six championships as an assistant coach and appears on his way to becoming a premier head coach.
#5 Ed Orgeron
Ed Orgeron compiled a 67-47 record in 10 seasons leading the Ole Miss Rebels, USC Trojans and LSU Tigers - winning the 2019 national title with the latter. While he may also be a long shot, the Fresno State Bulldogs should check if he has any interest.
