LSU Tigers quarterback Garrett Nussmeier has had an erratic season so far despite his team notching a 6-2 record. In Week 9 of college football action, Nussmeier registered 405 passing yards resulting in two touchdowns and three interceptions but was outperformed by Texas A&M Aggies QB Marcel Reed in the 38-23 loss.
During ESPN's "College GameDay" show on Saturday in Baton Rouge, retired coach Nick Saban dissected the issue that plagues both Nussmeier and Bama QB Jalen Milroe as quarterbacks.
“That’s the biggest problem with these guys (Milroe & Nussmeier)," Saban said." "They want to make plays. But they don’t need to [hace] shooting guard mentality. They need point guard mentality. Have 13 assists in a game and no turnovers. That’s good quarterback play.”
Against the Crimson Tide on Saturday, Nussmeier again struggled, overshadowed by Jalen Milroe, who used his dual-threat ability by rushing for four touchdowns, keeping Alabama on the field while the LSU quarterback threw a costly interception on a fourth-and-goal situation, followed by two more.
College football fans on X (formerly Twitter) reacted to Nussmeier's performance which included three interceptions against Kalen DeBoer's team.
In addition to the memes, some fans piled on Nussmeier's performance.
"Garret Nussmeier is a fraud," one fan tweeted.
"Garrett Nussmeier reminds me of Derek Carr. #LSU," another fan tweeted.
"I refuse to watch Garrett Nussmeier throw another football. Y'all have a good evening," one fan tweeted.
Garrett Nussmeier and Jalen Milroe share deep roots
LSU Tigers quarterback Garrett Nussmeier and Jalen Milroe share a long history, having first met at a 7-on-7 camp while still in high school in Texas. According to 247Sports, Nussmeier was the No. 14 quarterback and No. 84 overall prospect while Milroe was the No. 13 quarterback and No. 82 overall player in the class of 2021.
Ahead of the Alabama-LSU game, Milroe praised his fellow Texan.
"Number one, I support him (Nussmeier)," Milroe said. "He's a Texas quarterback, so all my Texas guys, I got to support them. I'm definitely proud of him for his development and him just keep on staying the course and seeing him just be the quarterback at LSU is just something I'm proud of him for."
While Nussmeier and Milroe share a deep connection, Milroe's performance outshined Nussmeier’s at Death Valley during their Week 11 matchup.
